5. Product Information

Diamonds (Natural and Lab Created)

Diamonds are divided into two main categories: natural and lab-grown. While natural diamonds are formed through natural processes that take millions of years, lab-grown diamonds are produced in a controlled environment and have the same physical, chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds. Both types of diamonds are valuable in terms of quality and beauty.

Quality and Grading (4Cs: Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat)

The quality of diamonds is judged by the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Cut is the most important factor in determining a diamond’s brilliance. Color refers to how colorless a diamond is and is graded from D (colorless) to Z (pale yellow). Clarity refers to the number and appearance of internal and external flaws in a diamond. Carat measures the weight of a diamond.

Carborite Stones

Carborite is a type of stone produced in a laboratory environment with properties similar to natural diamonds. Carborite stones, which offer high brightness and durability, offer a more economical alternative to diamonds. They are also preferred as an environmentally friendly and ethical option.

Features and Comparison with Diamonds

Carborite stones have higher brilliance and fire (light reflectance) compared to diamonds. However, diamonds are considered rarer and more valuable. Carborite stones are an ideal option for customers looking for a budget-friendly and environmentally friendly alternative.

Gold and Other Precious Metals

Gold is the most commonly used precious metal in jewelry. The purity of gold is expressed in karats, and 24 karat gold means pure gold. 18 karat (75% pure gold) and 14 karat (58.5% pure gold) gold are generally used in jewelry. In addition, other precious metals such as white gold, rose gold and platinum are also frequently preferred in jewelry.

Types and Quality (Settings, Color)

The quality of gold is determined by its karat value. Also, the color of gold is an important factor. There are different color options such as white gold, yellow gold and rose gold. Other metals used in gold alloys affect the color and durability of the gold.

Special Orders

Special orders are jewelry designed according to the customers' personal preferences and needs. The special order process must be managed carefully to make the customers' dream design a reality. It is important to be in constant communication with the customer and receive their feedback during the design process.

Design Process

The design process for special orders begins with determining the customer's wishes and needs. The design team creates unique designs that will meet the customer's expectations and these designs are presented to the customer for approval. Once the design is approved, the production process begins and the jewelry is carefully prepared.

An inventory management system tracks the incoming and outgoing of products, automatically updates stock levels, and provides regular reports. These reports play an important role in decision making in inventory management.

Reorder Protocols

Reorder protocols determine the steps to be taken in the event of low stock levels. When critical stock levels are reached, automatic orders should be activated and suppliers should be contacted to reorder products. Managing ordering processes quickly and efficiently ensures that products are supplied on time.

4Cs of Diamond (Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat)

Diamonds are evaluated based on four main criteria: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. These criteria determine the value and quality of the diamond.

Cut

The cut determines how the diamond reflects light and its brilliance. A good cut makes the diamond look brighter and more dazzling. The quality of the cut is evaluated by different grading systems by gemological laboratories such as GIA, HRD and AGS.

Color

The color of a diamond refers to the color tones within it. The most valuable diamonds are colorless. The color scale ranges from D (colorless) to Z (light yellow/brown). Different gemology laboratories perform color grading according to standards.

Clarity

Clarity measures the number and visibility of flaws inside and on the surface of a diamond. FL (Flawless) is the highest clarity grade and I3 (Included) is the lowest. These flaws are visible under a magnifying glass.

Carat

Carat refers to the weight of a diamond. One carat is 0.2 grams. As the carat weight increases, the value of the diamond also increases. Different gemological laboratories measure carat weight with precision instruments.

This information and images will allow you to provide customers with more detailed and understandable information about laboratory diamonds.

What is the Post-Growth Process for Lab-Created Diamonds?

Post-growth treatment is used when newly grown lab-grown diamonds have undesirable characteristics (such as low colour grade, heavy inclusions or internal lines). Diamonds that have undergone these treatments are referred to as ‘treated’ or ‘enhanced’. The aim of post-growth treatments such as HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) is to improve the quality of the diamond by removing as many of the undesirable characteristics as possible, however this can often cause the diamond to appear hazy. The more post-growth treatment a lab-grown diamond requires, the hazier it will become. Not all lab-grown diamonds need post-growth treatment – some are made perfectly (or nearly perfectly) so they do not need any post-growth treatment.

Lab-Created Diamonds in Post-Growth Processing

CVD Diamonds

  • Approximately 90% of CVD diamonds are treated post-growth.
  • CVD diamonds often have a brown undertone.
  • They grow very quickly so there is potential for spotty color or internal striping.
  • Sometimes CVD diamonds are produced using boron to balance the brown tone – which can give them a blue hue.
  • This means they are usually post-growing processed using HPHT to enhance color and remove ingrown hairs.
  • Post-growth treatments can cause diamonds to appear milky or hazy.

HPHT

  • HPHT diamonds sometimes have a blue or gray tint.
  • HPHT diamonds that need post-growth processing essentially just go through another round of HPHT.

Why Are So Many Lab-Created Diamonds Post-Growth Processed?

Around 90% of lab-grown diamonds made using CVD (chemical vapor deposition) appear slightly brown or yellow when first created. Because they grow so quickly, they can be prone to internal striations, an undesirable type of diamond inclusion. This means that they require post-growth treatment to keep them looking their best. Lab-grown diamonds can also be made using the HPHT process. Sometimes, they will contain black inclusions due to the graphite from the process, so a second round in the HPHT chamber is required to clean them. Not all lab-grown diamonds require post-growth treatment. Finding lab-grown diamonds that are ‘as-grown’ can take some time and effort – meaning they have not been post-grown – but they are totally worth it. Lab-grown diamonds tend to be more milky and hazy than those that have not. If you would like our experts to find lab-grown diamonds that are not post-grown, specific to you and your personal budget, contact us.

Why Should I Avoid Post-Growth Treated Lab Diamonds?

Lab diamonds that have undergone post-growth treatments often appear milky or hazy, meaning that the diamond will not shine as brightly and intensely as you would expect. The more treatments that are required, the more milky it will appear. The answer is quite simple – why would you choose a diamond that has undergone post-growth treatment when you can get an untreated one? A lab diamond that has not undergone post-growth treatment is likely to shine brighter and have a higher level of sparkle! The visualisation above compares what a lab diamond might look like before and after post-growth treatment – notice how the brown tones have disappeared, but the diamond now appears hazy. The visualisation below compares a high quality ‘as grown’ lab diamond that has not required post-growth treatment to a lab diamond that has required HPHT to remove colour and internal striations.

What Post-Growth Processing Do Lab Diamonds Go Through?

HPHT

  • The main treatment for a lab diamond that is not of the desired quality is HPHT. This is used to treat CVD diamonds that have poor colour or streaking and is used as a 'second round' for HPHT produced diamonds that show dark inclusions.
  • For CVD diamonds, the intense heat and pressure can cause small cavities, such as striations, to close and remove traces of color.
  • HPHT-created diamonds sometimes need a second round of HPHT. HPHT diamonds with black inclusions from the source graphite undergo another round of intense heat and pressure to reduce the markings. Some may argue that this is not necessarily a post-growth process, but rather a continuation of HPHT-created diamonds - but both the GIA and IGI currently list this as a post-growth process.

LPHT

  • Lab diamonds with only color flaws that have been colored by nitrogen and nickel only need the 'high temperature' portion of HPHT. In these cases, they are subjected to the LPHT (low pressure, high temperature) process to clear the color.

How to Find an Untreated Lab Diamond Online?

  1. Add your search parameters to the lab diamond search tool - we typically recommend color D to F, clarity VS1 to SI1. Make sure you choose the diamond shape you like and the carat weight or budget range.
  2. When you find a diamond you like, tap 'more information' below the diamond grades.
  3. Tap 'View certificate' and this will take you to the online IGI or GIA certificate. Here you will find comments about post-growth treatments. If the certificate says 'As Grown', this indicates that the diamond has not been post-growth treated.

There are very different qualities in MAN-MADE DIAMONDS that have the same color, clarity, carat and cut values and whose upper certificates appear similar.

The choice and/or preference between these qualities is entirely the choice of our customers. After all, they are all REAL DIAMONDS and what is important is that the financial equivalent of the quality you receive is FAIR.

Details to Consider When Buying Round Cut Diamond Earrings

When you are planning to make a pair of round cut diamond earrings and want them to look exactly the same, there are a few important specifications and tolerances that you need to pay attention to, other than color, carat, and clarity. Here are those specifications and recommended tolerances:

Main Features to Note:

  1. Cutting Quality:

he   Make sure both diamonds have the same cut quality. An Excellent or Very Good cut grade is recommended for optimal brilliance and symmetry.

  1. Symmetry and Polish:

he   Both diamonds must have symmetry and polish ratings of Excellent or Very Good. This ensures that both diamonds have a similar finish and light performance.

  1. Table Size:

The table size percentage (the flat top surface of the diamond) should be consistent in both diamonds.

he   Recommended tolerance: ±1% (for example, if one diamond has a table size of 57%, the other should be between 56% and 58%.)

  1. Depth Percentage:

he   The depth percentage (the height of the diamond from the table to the culet) affects the way light travels through the diamond.

he   Recommended tolerance: ±0.5% (for example, if the depth of one diamond is 61%, the other should be between 60.5% and 61.5%).

  1. Crown Angle:

he   The crown angle (the angle of the diamond's crown) affects the brilliance and fire of the diamond.

he   Recommended tolerance: ±0.5 degrees (for example, if the crown angle of one diamond is 34.5 degrees, the other should be between 34 and 35 degrees).

  1. Pavilion Angle:

he   The pavilion angle (the angle of the diamond's pavilion) is critical to light reflection and overall appearance.

he   Recommended tolerance: ±0.5 degrees (for example, if one diamond's pavilion angle is 40.8 degrees, the other should be between 40.3 and 41.3 degrees).

  1. Belt Thickness:

he   The girdle thickness (the edge of the diamond) should be consistent and make both diamonds look similar.

he   Opt for a “Thin to Medium” or “Medium Thick” belt-like thickness and ensure that both diamonds are in the same category.

  1. Fluorescence:

he   Both diamonds must have the same level of fluorescence (None, Light, Medium, Strong). Incompatible fluorescence can cause color differences in certain lighting.

  1. Measurements:

he   The actual millimeter dimensions of the diamonds must be very close so that they look exactly the same when worn as earrings.

he   Recommended tolerance: ±0.1 mm in diameter (for example, if one diamond is 6.5 mm in diameter, the other should be between 6.4 mm and 6.6 mm).

  1. Quality assurance:
    • Consistent Quality: These brands have rigorous quality control processes that ensure that every diamond meets their high standards.

Does a Certified Diamond Have Brand Value?

Even with a certified diamond, there is significant brand value in purchasing from these luxury retailers. Here is how they add value:

  1. Quality control:
    • These brands guarantee that every diamond is of the highest quality, often exceeding the standards set by certification bodies. They select the best stones, ensuring superior brilliance and fire.
  2. Origin and Ethics:
    • They ensure diamonds are ethically sourced and conflict-free, and provide detailed information about a diamond's journey from mine to market.
  3. Craftsmanship and Design:
    • Even if the design is omitted from the analysis, the craftsmanship is often superior, ensuring that the settings complement and enhance the beauty of the diamond.
  4. Brand Prestige:
    • The prestige associated with these brands adds intangible yet significant value. Owning a piece from Tiffany, Cartier, Bvlgari or Harry Winston is often seen as a status symbol.
  5. Customer Service and Experience:
    • The personalized buying experience, expert advice, and long-term service offered by these brands make the customer feel valued and supported.
  6. Investment and Resale Value:
    • Diamonds from these brands often retain or increase in value over time, due to the reputation of the brand. The brand name can make the piece more desirable on the secondary market.

Conclusion

While the intrinsic value of a certified diamond may be similar whether purchased from a major retailer or another source, the additional value from these luxury brands comes from meticulous quality control, ethical sourcing, superior craftsmanship, brand prestige and excellent customer service. This creates an immersive and luxurious experience that justifies the higher price tag for many consumers. Brand equity is a very real and important asset, especially for those who value heritage, exclusivity and impeccable service.

Once I Remove Legacy, Exclusivity, and Excellent Service, What Is Left for Me to Decide?

Once you take away the elements of heritage, exclusivity, and impeccable service, you are left with more objective and tangible factors to consider when making your diamond solitaire ring purchase decision. Here are the ones you should focus on:

  1. Quality Control and Assurance:
    • Strict Selection Criteria: Luxury brands have rigorous quality control processes that ensure that every diamond meets high standards. Even without heritage and exclusivity, the assurance that every diamond meets high standards is an important factor.
    • Certified Quality: Make sure the diamonds are certified by reputable certification bodies like GIA or AGS. This ensures the quality and authenticity of the diamond.
  2. Origin and Ethics:
    • Ethical Sourcing: Even without brand prestige, knowing that your diamond is ethically sourced and conflict-free is crucial. Luxury brands often ensure that their diamonds have a transparent and ethical journey.
    • Environmental Impact: Consider the retailer’s environmental practices. Responsible sourcing can have less environmental impact, which may be an important factor for you.
  3. Craftsmanship and Design:
    • Craftsmanship: The quality of craftsmanship is paramount. Even if we exclude the design aesthetics associated with big brands, the durability and precision of the setting and attention to detail in the craftsmanship are paramount.
    • Durability of the Setting: A well-made setting will ensure that the diamond is held securely in place and can withstand daily wear and tear.
  4. Value for Money:
    • Diamond Quality: Focus on the 4Cs (Cut, Color, Clarity, Carat). Make sure the diamonds you are comparing have similar grades in these categories. A well-cut diamond offers superior brilliance and sparkle.
    • Price Comparison: Compare prices of diamonds with similar features from different retailers. Make sure you are getting the best value for your money without paying too much for the brand name.
  5. After Sales Support:
    • Warranty and Maintenance: Look for retailers that offer good after-sales support, such as warranties, free maintenance, resizing and cleaning services. These services add value to your purchase.
    • Return Policy: Make sure there is a reasonable return policy in case the diamond does not meet your expectations.

Decision Making Based on Remaining Factors

  1. Evaluate the Certificate:
    • Check that the diamonds are certified by GIA, AGS or another reputable organization. This ensures the quality and characteristics of the diamond.
  2. Compare Diamond Quality:
    • Focus on the 4Cs. Make sure you compare similar diamonds in terms of cut, color, clarity and carat weight.
  3. Evaluate Ethical Practices:
    • Research the retailer’s sourcing practices. Ethical sourcing can be a major factor in your decision.
  1. Examine the Workmanship:
    • Carefully examine the details of the setting and overall craftsmanship. Make sure the diamond is securely set and the ring is well made.
  2. Evaluate After Sales Support:
    • Check to see what after-sales service the retailer offers. This can be critical to the long-term care of your ring.
  3. Make a Price Comparison:
    • Compare prices from different retailers for similar quality diamonds. Make sure you are not overpaying for a brand name and that you are getting value for your money.

Conclusion

Once brand legacy, exclusivity and impeccable service are taken out of the equation, your decision should be based on objective factors such as diamond quality (the 4Cs), certification, ethical sourcing, craftsmanship, after-sales support and value for money. These factors will help you make a well-informed decision and ensure you purchase a high-quality diamond solitaire ring that meets your expectations.

Additionally, long-term customer relationships should be strengthened by informing customers about future special offers and new products.

The quality of diamonds is evaluated according to the 4Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

Collaboration with the Customer

Collaboration with the customer during the custom order process is critical to achieving a perfect result. Taking customer feedback into account, staying in touch with the customer at every stage of the design process, and meeting their expectations increases customer satisfaction.

Appendix: Information on Lab Diamonds

Definition of Lab Diamonds

Lab diamonds are stones that are created in a laboratory environment and have the same physical, chemical and optical properties as natural diamonds. These diamonds are created by imitating natural processes and are difficult to distinguish from natural diamonds. Lab diamonds are a more economical and environmentally friendly alternative.

CVD and HPHT Processes

Lab diamonds are produced by the CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) processes. In the CVD process, carbon atoms are deposited onto a seed crystal and crystal growth is achieved. In the HPHT process, carbon is crystallized under high pressure and temperature. Both processes produce high quality, high purity diamonds.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Lab Diamonds

The advantages of lab diamonds include lower cost, environmentally friendly production, and ethical sourcing. Additionally, lab diamonds contain fewer flaws and are purer. The disadvantages are that some customers prefer them over natural diamonds, and the long-term investment value of lab diamonds may not be as high as natural diamonds.

Certification and Identification of Laboratory Diamonds

Lab diamonds are certified by independent gemological laboratories. These certificates specify the quality, size and other characteristics of the diamond. Laboratory diamonds are identified using spectroscopic devices and are used to distinguish them from natural diamonds.
