WHAT WE NEED TO KNOW WHEN DECIDING THE QUALITY OF DIAMOND CUT

What You Need to Know When Deciding on Diamond Cut Quality

The cut of a diamond not only affects its appearance but also its price. It is important to understand the key factors to ensure that you will be happy with your choice. In this article, we have compiled the important factors you need to know when it comes to diamond cut. Our article is divided into two sections: Part 1: Round brilliants and Part 2: Other shapes.

PART 1: Round Diamonds

The grade of a stone is only stated in the laboratory certificates for round brilliants. For all round brilliants, there is a universal set of standards by which diamonds are graded. In the case of IGI certificates, the highest is 'Ideal', followed by 'Excellent', 'Very Good', etc.

WHAT DOES CUTTING MEAN?

It is almost impossible to distinguish between an “ideal cut” and an “excellent cut” or an “excellent cut” and a “very good cut”. However, if you put them side by side, you can see a slight difference in brilliance between an “ideal cut” and a “very good cut”. The cut is an indication of how well a diamond reflects light. The lower the cut, the more light is likely to leak through. We recommend that our customers choose the one that fits their budget. As you may notice, there is a small price difference between the cuts, but if you have to sacrifice one for the other, you should go for a larger stone because the size is clearly visible to the naked eye.

If you want to save some money in your budget, a “perfect cut” stone is ideal. If you are on a tight budget but still want a great stone, a “very good cut” diamond is the best option. If you live in a city where we have showrooms, please feel free to make an appointment and come and see the differences in cut for yourself.

PART 2. ALL OTHER SHAPES

There is no set standard for evaluating all other diamond shapes. This is mainly because all other shapes can vary in size depending on personal taste. For example, when purchasing an oval diamond, you will find that some are longer and some are rounder. And this is the case for all other cut shapes except round diamonds. Therefore, there is no “cut classification” on these diamond certificates.

SO HOW DO YOU KNOW IF WHAT YOU BOUGHT IS GOOD?

Our gemologists have developed a set of standards for every shape that is not round. Our grading system allows you to find the “cut grade” of each stone when you search through our site.

Unfortunately we only grade stones that are available in our showrooms. However, if you find a stone that is not available in our showrooms and would like information about the cut, you can contact us and one of our gemologists will be happy to assist you.
